The Surgeon and the Saint is about a 70-year-old surgeon from New York named Dr. Louis R. M. Del Guercio, who despite never having hiked with a pack on his back, decides to walk 500 miles across Spain on the ancient Christian pilgrimage, El Camino de Santiago (The Way of St. James). His goal is to visit the tomb of St. James to ask him to teach his grandson Ian to walk. Ian was born with a severe birth defect and specialists gave him very little chance of ever walking.
This 64-minute documentary is about the story of the journey, but it’s also about the place of faith in the modern world and the relationship between fathers and sons. The journey proves very difficult for Dr. Del Guercio and he must find ways to overcome multiple obstacles. Does he make it, and does St. James grant him a miracle? Watch the film to find the answers.
